BlogPost:Fiber
Yesterday, I got Fiber to the home internet from brightspeed.
This blog post will be about it, what I plan to do with it, and more.
Background
For a while, I lived with shit, than eventually, decent download speeds via comcast, which although comcast is comcast, there weren't any better options.
This was fine for a while, but then, the upload speeds became more and more of a thing that eekeed me, not a problem per se, but a thing.
Main issues:
- File uploads would become a juggle between VPSes, onedrive accounts, etc.
- Backups would be basically impossible even if doable.
- Hosting anything would be agonizing without relying on weird juggling of VPSes, onedrive accounts, etc.
Fiber...
For a while, my area had no fiber, or any better ISP than comcast, until I got a letter in the mail from BrightSpeed saying we can get fiber.
After a bit I looked into it and found out we could get 2 gigabit for the same price we pay, and with more fun stuff (no contract, free 1st month, etc.)
So after a bit, I signed up, albeit I waited a while due to appointment availability, and it was installed fairly quickly (3 hours) and I got:
- Free installation
- The ONT to use (with both their router and my own)
- Their router (which I tried and al-tho it has 10Gigabit, I prefer my OPNSense setup which will be upgraded soon).
I ran some speedtests and I only got 1 Gigabit despite paying for double but...
... its due to my network hardware (none of my machines support 2.5 gigabit+ yet)
What do I plan to do with my new internet?
I plan primarily to both:
- Make backups of my machines without it taking forever.
- Host files, primarily to make a new windows archive (coming soon)
- Have fun, its what I deserve tbh.
